The Truth About Spider Veins

The Truth About Spider Veins

As you age, you may develop small blue, red, or purple veins on the surface of the skin, dubbed Spider Veins. These can show up on the legs or face. While these are not as prominent as varicose veins, they may still be an unwanted area of focus. What causes spider veins to form, how can you prevent them, and how can cosmetic medicine help you to diminish their appearance?

What Are Spider Veins?

Let’s start at the beginning with a simple question – what exactly are spider veins?

Spider veins are caused by excess blood pooling in a vein. This sounds scarier than it truly is. If veins have difficulty passing blood through them, they simply reroute by way of other vein branches. However, blood can pool in these veins and cause them to bulge. These small, visible vein lines under the surface of the skin are called spider veins.

Spider veins are not the same as varicose veins! Varicose veins are typically larger, deeper, lumpier, and more noticeable than smaller, finer spider veins.

Spider veins can result from a number of different catalysts:

  • Pregnancy
  • Genetics
  • Hormones
  • Spending long amounts of time on your feet
  • Carrying excess body weight
  • Sun damage

Spider veins are most frequently seen in women, especially as they age, and it is very often a trait passed down through the family line. Spider veins are seen with time or with aging. These veins are no reason for a medical concern, but there are still ways to prevent or diminish these veins from making unwanted appearances.

How Can You Prevent Them?

There are several simple practices you can put in place to help prevent spider veins from forming. Consider wearing compression garments like tights or compression socks to provide extra pressure and blood flow in the legs. Pay attention to your dietary intake, as well. Limiting extra weight on your legs can help to prevent negative pressure.

Stretching, deep tissue massage and other techniques to move circulation in the legs might help. For those of you able to do them, the inversions of yoga (eg: shoulder stand) can help as well.

To prevent facial veins, make sure to wear sunblock daily, even when you are not getting direct sun exposure! This helps to protect your skin from damage that can lead to broken blood vessels and spider veins.

Historically, spider veins in the face caused by excessive alcohol consumption have been called ‘gin blossoms.’ Avoid chronic excessive intake of large amounts of alcohol to prevent these.

Should you require cosmetic medical treatments, there are a few options to choose from.

Laser therapy in the face and legs utilizes a small beam of focused light that targets the vein, and causes it to clot and dry up.

This is a simplification of the science behind chromophores and light therapy. This is a fairly aggressive form of treatment.

Sclerotherapy is another option.

Your specialist will inject a saline solution into the vein, causing it to close, shrink, and ultimately vanish. While this is invasive, it is a very effective and accurate way to diminish these signs of aging.

Talk with your aesthetic and wellness specialist to find the best method of treatment for your spider veins!

When Should You Dissolve Your Fillers?

When Should You Dissolve Your Fillers?

You’ve most likely heard of Botox before. This facial injection is widely known and deeply loved by those passionate about non-surgical cosmetic treatments and facial rejuvenation. Still, it can come in handy for more than just wrinkle reduction.

Let’s look at what makes up Botox, the many conditions it can treat, and why you may be interested in getting Botox treatments for yourself.

What Should I Do?

Before rushing into reversing the effects of your fillers, it is important to consult with a trained professional in aesthetic medicine. Read reviews, and take personal accounts into consideration. A professional with proven experience in the field as well as certifications to back this up can help you to feel more confident about your chosen treatments.

These highly-qualified professionals can help you in a number of ways. You may be set on dissolving your fillers, but your professional may also be able to help you achieve the results you desire with the fillers you already have.

This professional may help to provide more symmetry to the face by balancing other areas with fillers, massaging the treatment area to remove any lumps or unevenness or use hyaluronidase enzymes to help dissolve or soften current fillers.

Remember that the effects of fillers are temporary but that treatments for reversal are also available.

If you are willing to wait a year or more, these unsatisfactory fillers will absorb into the body and naturally fade away. This can relieve some of your stress and tension following a less than satisfactory treatment. However, you may not be willing or even able to wait that long.

What Does It Mean To Dissolve Your Fillers?

If you decide that the results of your fillers aren’t right for you, a trained specialist can help!

As we mentioned earlier, hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve specific fillers including Belotero, Restylane, and Juvéderm Voluma. This enzyme breaks down hyaluronic acid-based fillers with visible results in up to three days. Hyaluronidase breaks the molecular bonds of the hyaluronic acid, allowing it to more quickly and naturally absorb into the body.

Be aware that this isn’t an exact science. While the enzyme is effective at dissolving the fillers, you may lose more than you originally intended and need a new filler treatment later on. Give your hyaluronidase treatment time to work its magic, and then gauge your level of satisfaction. You can then discuss further treatment with your aesthetic specialist.

While allowing your fillers to fade naturally is traditionally recommended over dissolving your fillers, you can always discuss your options with your aesthetic specialist. If you are experiencing any pain, swelling, or heat in the treatment area, consult with a professional immediately.

Platelet-Rich Plasma For Aesthetic Wellness

Platelet-Rich Plasma For Aesthetic Wellness

Believe it or not, you can utilize your body’s own natural methods of healing in facial rejuvenation. Today, we’re exploring Platelet-Rich Plasma, its amazing capabilities, and how they can be used to reduce the signs of aging.

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is gathered from your very own blood. Once a vial or so has been collected, it is placed within a centrifuge that then separates the red and white blood cells. The white blood cells contain a concentrated amount of platelets that are then used to create a PRP injection.

PRP has a long and safe history of use in the world of orthopedic surgery, medicine, and other disciplines. More recently, its powers have been appreciated for collagen growth and rejuvenation of aging tissues.

PRP therapy is often used in the treatment of painful injuries and musculoskeletal issues.

The PRP is injected into the site of injury and pain, and the concentrated platelets dissolve to release proteins that help to speed up recovery. This is especially useful for sport’s injuries, as well as muscle and joint pain!

PRP is often used to help with the symptoms of arthritis and to give cartilage a chance to heal. The same properties can be harnessed to improve your facial collagen, skin health, and overall appearance.

PRP is an amazing way to harness the body’s built-in powers of healing to alleviate pain and inflammation in an easy in-office, same-day treatment.

How Can It Be Used For Facial Rejuvenation?

Platelet-rich plasma sounds pretty amazing, right? But how does this translate into the world of facial rejuvenation and skincare?

Your platelets can be utilized in aesthetic wellness through PRP Facials, also known as Blood Facials or Vampire Facials. That may sound spooky, but the results are anything but.

Basically, PRP is deposited into the area where healing and growth is need with very small needles or painless blunt cannulas. The PRP is injected, and it induces collagen growth, draws in local stem cells with cytokine chemotaxis, and promotes skin rejuvenation in a very natural manner.

When PRP is used topically, your plasma sinks into your skin and helps to tighten your skin, promote collagen production, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and give your face a softer, smoother, more youthful appearance. You may also notice that your skin is more even and hydrated following your facial.

At Smooth By Sarah & Warner Orthopedics & Wellness, PRP can be applied topically with our patent-pending formulation using natural phytochemicals to drive the PRP into the collagen layer.

Let’s Look At the Process

Just like the process of PRP injections, your blood is gathered in a sterile office setting by a medical professional and placed in a centrifuge. Once the blood has separated, your platelets are then prepared for facial application. We utilize our patent-pending formulation to produce this healing cream.

Another way we can place PRP in the areas that need it most is with micro-needling.  In this treatment protocol, millions of microscopic punctures are created that cause collagen growth as part of the healing process.

First, your specialist will numb your face with a topical cream to avoid any sensitivity. Your skin is then prepped to be moisturized and free of any pigmentation. Your specialist will then use a micro-needling device to promote skin rejuvenation and collagen growth.

Then, PRP will be applied to the face and will enter the skin through the micro-needling punctures. This will allow the plasma to sink deep into the layers of your skin.

The combination of micro-needling and PRP is synergistic. The PRP will also allow your face to recover very quickly from the procedure. It normally takes 3 days or so, but with PRP that can be reduced to one or two days.

The process is essentially pain-free, and since the PRP is collected from your own blood, there is no chance for an allergic reaction to occur.

It is not uncommon to experience some sensitivity on the surface of your skin following your facial, but this is typically short-lived.

Again, the PRP not only creates better and more beautiful results, but it allows you to heal more quickly, too.

Results of micro-needling are apparent 6 weeks or so after the procedure. Expect to have younger feeling skin with the skin appearing tighter, brighter, and healthier, and these results can last many months.

Multiple PRP facials may be required for optimal results to reduce the appearance of fine lines, fine wrinkles, scarring, or skin damage. Alternatively, one micro-needling procedure with PRP followed by a few months of the topical PRP formulation can achieve similar results.

PRP Facial Services At Smooth By Sarah

If you are dealing with stubborn acne scars, wrinkles, loose skin, dryness, hyperpigmentation, and more, you are an ideal candidate for PRP facials. Micro-needling is an excellent method to eradicate fine lines and wrinkles and to regain a more youthful appearance of your skin.

If you have any questions concerning this treatment or are ready to schedule your appointment, contact us today at Smooth By Sarah today!

Health & Hydration With IV Infusion Treatments

Health & Hydration With IV Infusion Treatments

With the holidays coming up, there are plenty of factors that can help you feel less than energized. Whether you’re lucky enough to be traveling and experiencing jet-lag, fighting seasonal sickness, hungover after holiday festivities, or simply dehydrated, you need relief quickly. You may be feeling fatigued from a poor diet and general family and work stress as well.

That’s where IV Infusion Treatments come in.

What Are IV Infusion Treatments?

Intravenous (IV) Infusion Treatments are designed to deliver a strong dose of vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and hydration straight into your system for fast absorption and equally fast results. This is a common practice for many athletes, celebrities, and others who are concerned about their bodies, appearance, and wellness.

To be sure, there are not a lot of blinded, placebo-controlled studies that look at these therapies – but the lack of insurance coverage for these treatments stops studies from happening.

IV infusions have long been used in medicine and surgery to provide needed hydration and minerals with vitamins, medications, and other elements of health to a person in a fast and safe delivery mode.

You may be looking for active recovery from a hangover, illness, or general dietary deficiencies, or you may want to give your focus and productivity an added kick. IV Infusion formulations are designed to work within the body to boost vitamin or mineral levels in your system, hydrate tissues, rejuvenate the skin, increase metabolism, heighten libido, strengthen your immunity, and more.

While traditional supplementation can also help your system recover from deficiencies, the results are much slower and require small doses over a long period of time. Diet and supplementation will always be the preferred method of obtaining needed nutrition, minerals, and medications.

However, occasionally a rapid boost is desired. With IV Infusion Treatments, it is possible to safely nourish your system with larger doses of vitamins for fast, optimal availability.

We cannot and will not make any claims about how these treatments help fight and prevent disease. However, for those interested in optimal aging and stopping the inevitable decline in our mitochondria, hormones, and wellness that happens with age, this is something that should be considered.

What IV Treatment Is Right For Me?

There are several options to choose from when it comes to the right treatment for you. You may need a wash of fluids and electrolytes to hydrate and detoxify your system, or you may need a vitamin-rich treatment to reduce muscle pain, migraines, and even menstrual cramps. From fighting inflammation and pain to alleviating nausea and stress, there is an IV Infusion Treatment available to help you meet your needs.

For those fighting nerve-based pain, there is a protocol available as well. Weight loss often requires certain amino acids, minerals, and vitamins to augment your diet and exercise regimen. These are also available.

Your wellness specialist will help you to determine what IV treatment is right for you by assessing your vitamin deficiencies and wellness goals. Come appointment day, all you have to do is relax for up to an hour, though some treatments can be completed in about thirty minutes. Sit comfortably and take time to unwind as your specialist gets your IV properly placed and begins the IV drip.

One of the best parts of IV Infusion treatments is that there is no downtime! Simply come in for your appointment and then continue with your day feeling better, brighter, more hydrated, and nourished. This is also an excellent way to enhance recovery from rigorous work or sports and to prevent diminished performance at the office and on the field.

Your results should last two to three weeks, though this does vary from patient to patient.

For example, we can provide a treatment designed to support skin health and rejuvenation. We could design the treatment to provide assistance with weight loss or to recover from a procedure or surgery faster. We can provide treatments that allow you to enjoy friends and family this holiday season with a boosted immune system and better detoxification and recovery.

We work with you before, during, and after your therapeutic infusion to ensure optimal outcomes.

What Are the Signs of Crows Feet?

What Are the Signs of Crow's Feet?

Your eyes may be one of the first areas of the face that you notice signs of aging. You may see the beginnings of fine lines in the eye area, called crow’s feet. Let us help you spot the first signs of these wrinkles so that you can take quick action for preventing them.

The First Signs

Crow’s Feet get their name from the appearance of the fine lines themselves. Small wrinkles form at the outer corner of the eyes and look just like their namesake – the feet of a crow. When you smile or laugh, you’ll notice that the outer corner of the eyes scrunches up. As these wrinkles form, you’ll notice that the lines get deeper, longer, and stay visible even at a resting facial expression.

These wrinkles are caused by the loss of collagen in the eye area as well as lessened elasticity of the skin, both of which are natural processes of aging. The muscles that surround the eye are circular in nature, and wrinkles form perpendicularly to the pull of the underlying muscle.  Therefore crow’s feet are radial wrinkles that form perpendicular to the action of the orbicularis muscle.

Blinking, smiling, or any crinkling facial movements will ultimately and inevitably lead to the development of these fine lines. Oxidative stress is the primary source of aging in the skin. Other factors including sun exposure, air pollution, diet, and stress can affect your skin and promote the formation of crow’s feet, as well.

How Can I Prevent Them?

There are a few practices you can put in place to protect your skin from crow’s feet and other damage:

  • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.
  • Eat plenty of healthy fats to promote facial volume, and avoid sugary foods that inhibit collagen production.
  • Avoid smoking as this can speed up the aging process.
  • Wear sunscreen daily to protect against UV Rays and sun damage.
  • Look for skincare products with niacinamide and retinol to stimulate cell turnover and collagen formation.
  • Use moisturizing humectants like hyaluronic acid that draw moisture to the skin and diminish the appearance of fine lines.

Botox and other muscle movement inhibitors can prevent and eliminate the appearance of wrinkles. By lessening the force and pull of the orbicularis, these injections actually stop the wrinkle at its source. For full prevention and to keep a youthful appearance for as long as possible, regular injection therapy is required. Usually, Botox is injected into this area every 3-4 months.

If you are seeking dermal fillers, Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero offer fillers that are perfect for the delicate eye area. These fillers help to add plumpness back into the hollowed areas created by a loss of volume and collagen.

Facial Rejuvenation With Smooth By Sarah

Wrinkles and skin imperfections are a natural part of life and the aging process, but it is nice to take the best care of your skin possible to slow down the signs of aging. First and foremost, we recommend taking preventative measures by providing your skin with hydration from the inside out. Drink plenty of water, eat healthy meals, protect your skin from UV rays, and apply hydrating eye cream to keep the skin soft and flexible.

For further prevention or correction of crow’s feet, seek dermal fillers to help restore plumpness to the eye area. At Smooth By Sarah, we can help to find the perfect filler to volumize and sculpt the features of the face to bring back youthfulness and vibrancy. The Many Areas of Botox

The Many Areas of Botox

If you are interested in facial rejuvenation and anti-aging treatments, you have probably already heard of Botox injections. There are many different body areas that Botox injections can be beneficial, not just on the face. Some of these areas may just surprise you.

Where Can I Get Botox Injections?

As we have mentioned before in our What Is Botox blog, Botox is not just useful for treating facial imperfections and signs of aging. Let’s look at some of the areas that Botox can be injected, both in the face and in other places you may not expect.

1. Face

You know this already! Botox is regularly used during facial rejuvenation for sites including the marionette lines around the mouth, the wrinkles on either side of the nose (bunny lines), or crinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) or in the forehead.

This injectable medication immobilizes the muscles and prevents fine lines and wrinkles from forming. This can also be injected into the jaw to avoid muscle clenching, teeth grinding and to treat the pain associated with the temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).

2. Armpits

Botox can be injected straight into the underarms to help prevent hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. If antiperspirants or medication are not providing you with results, your doctor may recommend using Botox injections to block the nerve signals responsible for sweating.

Botox can help to reduce an overactive autonomic nerve response. Results following your session typically last for up to six months.

3. Breasts

This is not a traditional injection site for Botox, but it is an option nonetheless. In some cases, most commonly used during a breast lift, a physician will inject Botox into the pectoralis minor (or the chest region) to prevent muscles from contracting. This helps the back muscles adjust to the weight of the breasts to keep them lifted.

The pectoralis minor is generally responsible for placing the shoulders too far forward and causing ‘poor posture.’ Botox can also help smooth out any lines around the breasts developed with age or sun damage.

4. Scalp & Neck

There are a few reasons you might seek Botox injections in the scalp. Like the armpits, the scalp can be susceptible to excessive sweating. A physician can inject Botox all over the scalp to regulate sweating. Patients also seek Botox injections in the scalp and neck to prevent painful muscle contractures that contribute to migraines.

If traditional treatment methods are not helping to reduce your migraines, ask your physician about Botox as a solution.

5. Acne

Small amounts of Botox can be injected into the face at the site of an active acne breakout to help control acne-causing oil production. It can even help to decrease pore size! This is not recommended for general acne treatment and should not be used as your primary method of skincare. Still, it is an effective – though temporary – option available for acne management if recommended by your doctor.

These are just five locations that Botox can be used, from the most conventional to the unconventional. Talk with your specialist to see how Botox can be most beneficial for your needs!

Everything You Need To Know About Fillers

Everything You Need To Know About Fillers

Dermal Fillers are a fantastic option to help you fight visible aging signs, such as volume loss. Whether you are looking to reduce the look of wrinkles, volumize your lips, make your cheeks appear less hollow, or create a more youthful overall appearance, injectable filler treatments are available to help you achieve these goals.

In the world of fillers, there is quite a lot to choose from. What are fillers, what are they made of, and which ones are right for your needs?

What Are Fillers Made Of?

Most injectable fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a natural hydrophilic (or water-loving) substance. Hyaluronic acid works by plumping the skin from within and drawing moisture to itself to keep the skin hydrated and supple. Other fillers incorporate polylactic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite to help stimulate collagen production.

When injected into the face, dermal fillers provide extra support beneath the skin to offer volume, smoothness, and elasticity typically lost with aging.

Fillers can be scary, but many formulations contain lidocaine to help lessen the injection process’s discomfort. Rest assured that professional fillers used by licensed specialists, like Sarah Balladares of Smooth By Sarah, are FDA-approved for safe injections and significant results.

These are just a few of the most popular filler options on the market that you can choose from:

  • Belotero®
  • Radiesse®
  • Juvéderm®
  • Restylane®
  • Sculptra®

Each filler is explicitly formulated to best suit different areas of the face. Consult with your provider to determine the right filler for your desired facial enhancement.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Once you have chosen the right filler for you, your specialist will begin by injecting the dermal filler into the area that needs extra volume. Following a pre-treatment consultation, your specialist will clean, and possibly numb, the area in which the filler will be injected into. Your provider will inject the exact amount of filler needed into the chosen location, including the lips, around the mouth, in the cheeks, chin, or temples.

Generally, principles of recreating a youthful appearance based on the known volume loss of aging are followed. Fillers can also indirectly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

You may experience slight bruising or sensitivity following injection, though this is typically short-lived. Results can be noticed immediately and can last for six months or longer, though this can vary from person to person.

As we mentioned earlier, there is a sea of dermal fillers available for facial injections. When it comes to which filler you need, that depends entirely on your needs and the goals you want to reach!

For example – Juvéderm® is useful for a variety of treatments from filling acne scars to plumping hollow under eyes and smoothing wrinkles in the chin, and Juvéderm® Ultra can be used in the lips.

Restylane® can help smooth the vertical lines above the upper lip and reduce the nasolabial folds’ appearance or the cheek lines on either side of your nose.

Discuss your options with your filler provider to find what fillers will be best for you.

When searching for a provider for your fillers, it is always important to seek out one with a professional, proven history in cosmetic medicine.

Do your research! Ask for before and after pictures, read reviews, and make sure that quality fillers are being used in a sterile environment.

Remember – just because offering discounted fillers does not mean that this is a safe and valid option to consider. Finding the right provider will ensure that you get the best results without cosmetic botching.

What Is Botox?

What Is Botox?

You’ve most likely heard of Botox before. This facial injection is widely known and deeply loved by those passionate about non-surgical cosmetic treatments and facial rejuvenation. Still, it can come in handy for more than just wrinkle reduction.

Let’s look at what makes up Botox, the many conditions it can treat, and why you may be interested in getting Botox treatments for yourself.

What Are Botox Injections?

Botox is an injection made with small doses of recombinant Clostridium botulinum toxin. This toxin is found naturally in the intestinal tracts of fish and animals. The injection is created by diluting the powdered Botulinum toxin with saline.  The actual toxin is a recombinant formulation of onabotulinum toxin-A.

Though Botox is a toxin, it is FDA-approved for the treatment of both medical and aesthetic needs. This neurotoxin temporarily paralyzes the muscle tissue at the site of injection. It does so by changing the neuromuscular junction’s effectiveness. This is the region that allows a nerve to trigger a movement in a muscle. By blocking the neuromuscular junction, the muscle is barred from working. Since muscle is what pulls on the skin to give expression, it will cause wrinkles over time, stopping the muscle works to stop wrinkles from forming.

Botox’s function is essential for preventing and diminishing common wrinkles, including smile lines and crow’s feet, as well as painful muscle contractures. Botox has a long history of medical uses to stop pathologic contractions.

What Does Botox Treat?

There are many reasons that one might consider Botox injections, and some of them may just surprise you:

  • Botox helps to restore a youthful appearance by smoothing facial wrinkles.
  • Botox can restore facial contouring due to volume loss.
  • Botox can help to fight chronic migraines and muscle contractures in the neck and shoulders.
  • Botox can help to combat excessive underarm sweating and bladder issues.
  • Botox is used for a variety of spastic and contractile medical conditions.

Did these reasons surprise you? For many, they see Botox as merely a cosmetic treatment. They’re not wrong, as Botox is the nation’s most popular and well-known facial rejuvenation method. However, Botox treats more than just surface-level needs, going as far as helping men (yes, men) and women find relief from debilitating pain from migraines and muscle pain.

During an appointment, Botox may be injected between the eyes, in the corners of the mouth, or in the forehead or chin to both to help reduce wrinkles. Still, your physician may also inject under the arms to fight hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) or into areas of muscle contractures.  Where the injection occurs will depend on your needs as a person and patient.

Injections are performed using sterile techniques in office settings and have no necessary recovery time, though it can take up to 14 days for Botox’s effects to show. Usually, the effects of Botox happen within 7-10 days. Results often last anywhere from three to twelve months.
